What a system looks like

One outdoor unit connects by refrigerant line to one or more indoor heads. Each head heats and cools its own space on its own setpoint. A single-zone system for a converted garage is a straightforward one-day install. A four-zone system across a second floor takes two days and a lot of careful line routing.

Pricing from recent jobs

• Single zone, 12,000 BTU, one room: typically $4,200 – $5,600
• Two zones on one outdoor unit: typically $7,000 – $9,500
• Three to four zones: typically $11,000 – $16,000
• Whole-house ductless replacing electric baseboard: quoted per house after a walk-through

Where they're the wrong answer

We'll talk you out of it when a mini-split isn't right. If you already have good ductwork and a furnace that's near end of life, a conventional system plus a heat pump is usually cheaper and simpler. If the only problem is one hot bedroom, the fix might be a duct modification or a return added, for a fraction of the cost. And if you can't tolerate a visible unit on the wall, say so up front — ceiling cassettes and low-wall consoles exist, and we'd rather find that out at the estimate than after we cut a hole.

Filters and upkeep

Mini-split heads have washable filters that need rinsing every month or two — takes two minutes and makes a real difference. The blower wheel and drain pan need a proper cleaning annually, especially in kitchens and pet households. That's included in our maintenance plan. Neglected heads are the reason mini-splits sometimes get a musty-smell reputation; a maintained one doesn't smell like anything.
